| Kings Manor Community School Raises the Profile of ODM Office Supplies in the UK |
|
|
|
Students from Kings Manor Community School
|
The girls from Kings Manor Community School involved all the staff, customers and members of the public in and around the Brighton and Hove area. Their energy and enthusiasm was tangible as they moved with mature professionalism inviting the adults to be interviewed, complete surveys and take part in visioning exercises. The team needed to search their own imagination and use the tools they had learned effectively.
The fog started to lift enabling them to collate and record their findings and recommendations. I was blown away not only by the effective way they had used all they had learned but also their hard work and diligence reflected in their information book. Behind their smiles I could see blind panic about the pending presentation, so on the 4th day I briefly joined the team, allocated roles and instilled confidence.
To say I was impressed by the students, & ODM, is an understatement. They surpassed all their own expectations and supported each other to the hilt. Candidly the team talked about all they had learned and achieved; rightly, after the presentation they were emotional while sharing a huge sense of achievement and relief. Mountains had been climbed. Their audience were very proud!
ODM gave a tremendous reply of thanks showing appreciation of the girls hard work, findings and recommendations. For me it was a pleasure to not only work with such a dedicated team knowing I had freely given value; but also that ODM are seriously considering their recommendation.

Students Mindshop Tertiary Study Dilemma
The Peninsula Campus Management of Monash University recently hosted seven Year 10 students from Mount Eliza Secondary College who undertook a week's work experience through the Mindshop Excellence program. The students had a week to explore the project challenge set by Campus Manager, Katherine Lock on: What can we do as a community to increase the number of young people who go on to university? The project was based on the Federal Government's targets of 40 percent of 25 to 34-year-olds attaining a higher education qualification by 2025. |
"With only 28 percent of young people going onto university from school in the region, and many organisations and groups looking at the reasons behind this lower that average attendance, we hoped that these students could shed some light and fresh ideas on the issue", Katherine explained.
The students, together with Mindshop facilitators Chris and Julie Mason and Frank Wyatt, developed a strategy to find out what the current situation was and develop suggestions as to what the community could do to encourage participation in university study. |

The students undertook a survey of Years 7, 10 and 11 students at Frankston High School and Mount Eliza Secondary College, as well as current Monash Peninsula students.
One of the most interesting findings was that 61 percent of Year 7 students said they were very interested in attending university but by the time they got to Year 11 that number had dropped to 38 percent.
Following this very successful project, Deb Batt – Mount Eliza SC Careers Counsellor, met the students to discuss the implications of their findings on her careers work within the College. The Principal, Heather Worral invited the students to present to the school’s College Council meeting and subsequently they were asked to present to the Peninsula Career Education Association. |

Students Study on the High Seas!
|
Norwood Morialta students turned a thrilling “once in a lifetime” experience into an educational opportunity on their Mindshop Excellence program. Maurie Vast of GSI Consulting which ran the five-day program, said it comprised a day of training, two days on the ship, a day of evaluating and then a presentation on the Friday. Students were unfurling the sails, coiling the lines and scrubbing the decks, all in the interest of researching how the ship can appeal to more young people. The group leader said her team thought the voyage could be developed as a reward for students who do volunteer work, where local councils or businesses who benefit could repay their efforts through sponsorship for a trip. Balancing atop the rigging was a highlight for many students, with Ben saying it was a huge adrenalin rush. Even seasoned “boaty” Maurie Vast found the 8 metre swells quite a challenge! Deputy Chairman of the Tall Ships Program, Trevor Gill said “There’s such a history of the original coastal trading in South Australia, (the voyage) is living history but it’s also providing life skills”. |

Ballarat Business Month is Showcased by Excellence students |
The chance to solve a real problem for an organisation was a challenge for Year 10 students from four Secondary colleges in the Ballarat region and they undertook their tasks with a fresh approach. As part of the annual Australian Industry Group, B31 Business Month in August, Mindshop Excellence was invited to run four Excellence programs to showcase the diversity of local Industries to students and the community. The group of 26 students representing four schools from the Ballarat region were taken through the day of training at the BRACE facilities by Chris Mason and assisted during the week by Emily Mason, John Tabone, David Smith and Peter Veal. Students accomplished a great deal in one week, presenting their findings to businesses, parents, teachers and peers at the Ballarat Town Hall on the Friday afternoon.

Adelaide High School Students Sail Away on the One and All
|
On the first day of the their Mindshop Excellence programs Maurie Vast, together with Jim Martin, inducted the student teams in the problem solving tools they would use all week to find solutions to their project. The highlight of the week was undoubtedly the 2 days spent on the Tall Ship even though a couple of participants discovered they didn’t have “sea legs”! The One and All calls on the same qualities valued at Mindshop – teamwork, initiative, communication – and, at the same time, it offers personal and physical challenges never found in a classroom. One of the students wrote “I think the Mindshop program has created and enhanced a thinking process within me that is able to make me structure myself through tough decisions which are bound to occur. It has taught me these processes through teamwork and communication; this will help me when I am working in other social groups.” Participating students are now eligible to complete Duke of Edinburgh commitments or SACE credits and they will have memories they can treasure.

| A 'Real Work Experience' takes place at A G Coombs, Moorabbin |
During the first week of Term 4, six Year 10 students from The Peninsula School participated in an Excellence program at A.G. Coombs. This is their experience ….
We arrived on the first day unsure of what to expect as we had not been told what our problem to solve would be. We began work with our Mindshop consultants, Michael Burke and Suzanne Whitmarsh, who referred to us not as students but as consultants. Throughout the next few days we struggled with the task and grew together as a group learning how to work under time pressure without teachers to help us out. On the Friday we put the finishing touches to our report and entered the boardroom for the formal presentation.

It was an extremely proud moment for us all – to present our findings to the management of A.G.Coombs, members of the school and our parents.

| Young Students Maximise Car Sales for Gen Y at Toyota |

|
Students from De La Salle College with Mindshop Facilitators Mark Lennon & Peter Longhurst |

Many thanks to Di Dickens, Manager, Dealer Development, Toyota Institute Australia, NSW, for securing the Stewarts Toyota dealership as a host for 10 students from De La Salle College. The students Excellence challenge for the week was, “How can we improve on our ability to get young people into our cars at Stewarts Toyota. What interests them and how do we make best use of the social networking sites to maximise our business? “
The students greatly appreciated the dedication and outstanding mentoring by Mindshop Facilitators Mark Lennon and Peter Longhurst during the week and one of the students wrote to them; “This is just a short note to thank you for the valuable week spent at Toyota completing the Mindshop Excellence Program. My fellow students and I learnt valuable tools that will help us as we continue along our career paths. I appreciate the time and effort that you put into the team and your guidance proved immeasurable. I am proud to be a member of the Mindshop group and will certainly use their services in the future. I hope we get the opportunity to communicate again. I am truly sorry that the program has ended. I would heartily recommend it. Thank you once again for your leadership and support and for giving up your time to help us.
According to the school, the students are still enthusiastically telling everyone how fantastic the program was.
Mark Lennon commented that despite the typical shaky start to the Friday, the students gave a particularly good presentation. They were a great group of young adults; very focussed. They presented some very good action plans and received well-deserved high praise and very positive feedback from Toyota, teachers and parents. They pulled together a great presentation and the material they gathered was amazing. The Dealer Principal was stunned and as he didn’t have his management team at the formal presentation, he invited the students to present to them again in early November.

Group Academic Award for Maryborough Excellence Students
|
Despite the disheartening reality of a small country town manufacturing business desperately competing for a market share in the global economy, it was all smiles recently when a group of students from the local Highview Community College commenced their Excellence program. Their host, Sutton Tools, a well known successful family owned tool making business is located in Maryborough (That’s a country town 2 hours from Melbourne for our friends interstate and overseas). After their day of training, the 6, Year 10 students donned their consulting caps and began working on their project requiring them to discover solutions to increase production, decrease labour and repetitive handling which will in turn decrease occupational strain injuries (OSI).
Many thanks to Bill Winter who facilitated and mentored the group and commented that he wished some of the staff of his clients were as positive and enthusiastic as these students. Bill was assisted by John Tabone and fellow Mindshop Facilitator, Shane Bicknell, who sadly discovered the long drive back to Ballarat was a panel beater’s joy when his car came to grief with a large kangaroo!
|
The students wowed the large crowd who attend their presentation, with their outstanding performance and solutions to their challenge.
Their talents were rewarded at the recent inaugural Central Goldfields Shires Youth Awards night when they were presented with the Group Academic Award. After discussion with their teacher, John Christie it was decided that they would donate their $100 prize money to the Mindshop Educational Trust as thanks for their amazing Excellence experience and support.

| Four Excellence Programs Showcase WorkSafe Week in Ballarat |
|
Students from Mt Clear College, Ballarat Secondary College
East Campus and Wendouree Campus
|
The four Excellence programs conducted in Ballarat were facilitated by Chris Mason, James Mason and Emily Mason and assisted by “first time Excellence Facilitator,” Shane Bicknell. The four programs were supported by the Australian Industry Group and sponsored by BROSCH.
Understanding the world of work took on a whole new meaning to our teams when they were given the task of investigating hazards and safety risks at Sovereign Hill (apparently those wood pile heaps are very tempting to climb for tiny tots!) or redesigning the external “shell” of a pumping generator to comply with OH & S regulations at Central Highlands Water. Of special note were the efforts of our young team of VCAL students placed at Laminex. These young people are all at risk of disengaging from education or training and need to be motivated to learn and gain skills in a non-school setting. The challenges during the week were at times overwhelming for them but they banded together as a team, came up with some significant cost savings to the company’s project and more importantly spoke with confidence at their formal presentation. The City of Ballarat, employing the equivalent of over 770 full time employees gave their work experience students the challenge of discovering the benefits that a Well Being program would offer to a large organisation in improving work outcomes for both the employer and employee.
All the groups never lost focus on being the best that they could especially at the formal presentation held at the Ballarat Town Hall. Their smiles just light up the room! |
Five Excellence Programs Showcase Worksafe in Bendigo |
The five programs in Bendigo were supported by WorkSafe Victoria to showcase the importance of good safety regulations in local industries and businesses. Excellence devotee, teacher and mentor, John Tabone, coordinated the Bendigo programs and was wrapped to be able to work with facilitators Mike Boyle, Harry Kras, Pat Horan, Laurie Preston and Frank Wyatt. The level of interaction from students according to all the hosts was fantastic. A sense of fun, and achievement was demonstrated with some incredible outcomes.
Mindshop Facilitator, Mike Boyle commented, “We started with 26 ‘kids’ and finished the week with 26 adults that provided amazing solutions to the host companies. It still bewilders me how these young adults given only a day of teaching and a real business problem manage in 3 days to produce wonderful business solutions that blow parents, facilitators and business away. If only we treated all our young people this way! We are indeed in safe hands after all.”

Bendigo Pottery - 2 issues were presented :-
1. Redesign the current complement of lights to achieve:
2. Redesign the Packing area for terracotta pot feet so that the unloading and packing process wil result in:
Australian Turntable Company
Development of a marketing strategy for the company’s newly designed “eco-friendly” Enviro Pods.
Jimmy Possum
To develop an emergency evacuation plan for the Bendigo store which can then be used as a model for all Jimmy Possum stores nationwide.
Bendigo Access and Employment
Identify what Bendigo Access and Employment can do to minimize hazards and risks and improve safety at each of its work sites.
Righteous Pups
In order for Righteous Pups Australia to expand the number of assistance dogs trained by the organisation, they need to find more people willing to foster the pups during their training phase. The issue is to recommend ways in which the organisation can attract more foster families for the pups.
