Safety Awareness Plan for students at BlueScope Steel

The BlueScope program was facilitated by Mindshop Facilitators, Ross Mitchell and Chris Mason. Students were from the Westernport Secondary College at Hastings, who worked on improving the safety culture of the 1200 person steel mill.

The project was challenging, in part because BlueScope is one of the leading Australian companies with regard to safety implementation. The student’s one page plan recommended innovative strategies such as a “safety week” and the use of “social media” to reach both the younger employees and families of BlueScope and their contractors. The maturity and dedication of the students enabled them to quickly integrate into the BlueScope workforce; over 20 percent of the employees were surveyed to gather the data required for the project.
